Work backward from your take-home pay
Result
This is an estimate. It uses the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 2026 percentage method and state rules as of . Real paychecks depend on your employer’s payroll system, your W-4, your benefits and your pay so far this year. It is general information, not tax, legal or financial advice.
Quick answer
To take home $1,000 a week in Texas as a single filer paid weekly, you need about $1,192.38 a week before tax. That’s about $62,004 a year, or $29.81 an hour for a 40-hour week. As a rough guide in these states, a single filer taking home $30,000 to $70,000 a year needs about $1.15 to $1.25 of gross pay for every $1 of take-home pay. Married couples filing jointly need a little less. Federal withholding uses IRS Publication 15-T (2026).
How to use the net to gross calculator
- Enter the take-home pay you want, and choose whether that’s per paycheck, week, month or year.
- Pick your state, how often you’re paid and the filing status from your Form W-4.
- Optionally add your weekly hours to see the hourly rate you’d need, and open “More options” for 401(k) savings, health premiums and dependents.
- Press Calculate to see the gross salary, gross pay per paycheck and hourly rate you’d need, with a check that runs the numbers forward.
How net to gross is calculated
Take-home pay = gross pay − pre-tax deductions − federal income tax − Social Security − Medicare − state deductions
Gross pay needed = the smallest gross pay whose take-home pay reaches your target
There’s no simple formula to run a paycheck backward, because federal income tax rises in brackets and Social Security stops at a yearly cap. So the calculator does what payroll teams do: it tries a gross amount, works out the take-home pay with the same IRS method as our paycheck calculators, and narrows in until it finds the gross pay, to the cent, that gives you at least your target.
Worked example
Taking home $1,000 a week in Texas
A single filer paid weekly in Texas wants $1,000 a week in take-home pay. The calculator finds a gross of $1,192.38 a week. Checking it forward:
- Gross pay: $1,192.38 a week, or $62,003.76 a year.
- Federal income tax: the adjusted annual wage is $53,403.76. The IRS table for single filers gives $1,240.00 + 12% of the amount over $19,900.00 = $5,260.45 a year, or $101.16 a week.
- Social Security (6.2%): $73.93. Medicare (1.45%): $17.29.
- State income tax: $0.00.
Take-home pay: $1,192.38 − $101.16 − $73.93 − $17.29 = $1,000.00. At 40 hours a week, that gross pay works out to about $29.81 an hour.
When you’d actually use a net to gross calculator
- Negotiating a salary. You know what you need each month to cover rent, bills and savings. Offers are quoted before tax, so this tells you the number to ask for.
- Checking whether a new job covers your costs. Work out the hourly rate you’d need before you accept shifts or a pay cut.
- Planning a move to another state. Compare the gross pay needed for the same take-home pay in different states.
What this calculator doesn’t include
- States with a state income tax. We’re starting with Texas, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee and Washington.
- Roth 401(k) contributions, union dues, garnishments and other after-tax deductions.
- Bonuses, overtime and other pay that changes during the year.
- Forms W-4 from 2019 or earlier.
How we calculate
We use the same engine as our state paycheck calculators: the 2026 percentage method in IRS Publication 15-T, Worksheet 1A, the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500, Medicare at 1.45% plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000, and Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave and WA Cares premiums where they apply. We search for the lowest gross pay, to the cent, whose take-home pay is at least your target, so your take-home pay may come out a cent or two above it. Weekly targets are converted using 52 weeks a year, and monthly targets using 12 months. The hourly rate is the yearly gross pay divided by 52 weeks of your hours.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between net pay and gross pay?
Gross pay is what you earn before anything comes out. Net pay, or take-home pay, is what’s left after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, any state deductions and pre-tax benefits such as a 401(k).
How much do I need to make to take home $1,000 a week?
In Texas, Florida, Nevada or Tennessee, a single filer paid weekly needs about $1,192 a week before tax, or about $62,000 a year. In Washington it’s a little more because of state payroll premiums. Your filing status, benefits and dependents change the figure.
Why isn’t gross pay just take-home pay plus a fixed percentage?
Federal income tax is charged in brackets, Social Security stops at a yearly cap and some deductions are fixed amounts, so the share taken out changes as pay rises. That’s why the calculator searches for the exact amount instead of adding a flat percentage.
Can I use this for a state with income tax?
Not yet. It covers Texas, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee and Washington, which don’t tax wages. In other states the result would be too low, because state income tax would also come out.
