Stamp duty

Stamp duty (transfer duty) for investors, home buyers and first home buyers.

About stamp duty in Australia

Stamp duty, officially called transfer duty (or land transfer duty in Victoria), is a state tax paid when you buy property. Each state sets its own rates and concessions, so the same price can attract very different duty in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. First home buyers can often pay less or nothing at all.

Frequently asked questions

Which states do you cover?

New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland so far. We plan to add more states and other property calculators over time.

Are the stamp duty rates current?

We checked them against each state’s revenue office on the date shown on each page. NSW thresholds change every 1 July, so always confirm with the revenue office before you rely on a figure.
